I’m actually not hopeless in the kitchen

This weekend I made rotis 😌

You read that correctly: I (Melody) made rotis.

Full disclosure, my mom and I made them together, but still. In my family, everyone can cook. My grandmas, my mom, aunt, cousins, sister… all of them are wonderful in the kitchen. It’s not even fair.

For example, I remember when my little cousin (I think she was 11 at the time, maybe 12), came to stay with us for a few weeks. We knew she loved baking, so we got this mix for brownies. So my mom suggests we make brownies together, and this girl says: “yes, I have a recipe.” And we tell her that we got a mix and the look of judgement on her face… I’ll never forget. Now, she finds pictures of cakes on the internet, and then recreates them like it’s nothing. The talent is so real.

I can go on and on about all the women in my family and their cooking skills (and before my dad and uncle start with me: they’re very talented too 😉). However, then this would turn into a novel where I sing their praises. Don’t get me wrong, they’d totally deserve that, but right now I just want to tell you about the amazing time I had with my mom making rotis this weekend.

Since the start of the lockdown in March last year, my mom and I have been saying that we wanted to make rotis together. I’ve only ever done that with my grandma present as well, and I didn’t do a very good job. My grandma had to step in more than once to fix my mistakes. So when we finally decided to make rotis this weekend, I wasn’t exactly expecting a good outcome. Especially since I’d be in charge of filling and rolling, without the help of my grandma.

Let me tell you, it was like my great-grandmother herself was guiding me through it, because it went SO SMOOTHLY. Ok, were they perfectly round? No. Two even came out square. BUT LOOK:

Cannot express how proud I am of the results

I know this isn’t exactly in line with what I’ve been posting, it’s literally just some wholesome content (and a total flex). I like talking about a lot of things, but it has to come from a genuine place.

So today, I just wanted to share some of the joy that my mom and I experienced making rotis together. We had so much fun together, dancing in the kitchen, while being totally shocked that we were actually making rotis and they were coming out great.

It would be great if one day soon we can do it again, with my grandma right there with us.
